Functional medicine is a way of taking care of your health by digging deep to uncover the root cause, rather than just treating the symptoms. We do this by focusing on you as a whole person and understanding how things like your genes, environment, and lifestyle can affect your health. Instead of following a one-size-fits-all approach, functional medicine looks at your body as a collection of different systems, like your stomach, immune system, hormones, and brain. The goal is to find out what might be going wrong in these systems and how they are connected.
Functional medicine uses different methods to figure out what's happening in your body, such as tests, changes to your diet, and lifestyle, and ways to handle stress. Sometimes, it might be recommended to use natural remedies or supplements. Functional medicine is all about helping your body heal itself by giving it what it needs. This allows you to take charge of your own health and how to make choices that support your well-being.
Nikki has been a lifelong learner always looking to increase her knowledge to help others. She began her educational journey with a Bachelor of Science degree from Westminster College in Pennsylvania. From there she went on to a Masters in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. She worked in a multi-disciplinary practice as the Director of Rehabilitation. This sparked her interest to want to pursue further training in healthcare.
She worked in many areas of nursing from babies to older adults. She was passionate about being an advocate for patients and their families but wanted to have the autonomy to provide a higher level of care. She returned to school to become a Board Certified Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and also earn her Doctor of Nursing Practice. She worked in many areas as a Nurse Practitioner including emergency medicine, critical care, endocrinology, geriatrics, palliative medicine and hospice. The experience of being alongside someone navigating the final stages of their life was intensely meaningful. It educated her on the art of attentive listening and supporting them to the very end. Nikki transitioned to functional medicine to have the ability to truly advocate for patients, listen with a purpose and take part in shared decision making to find the best approach for your well-being.
